Port-au-Persil, named in the 17th century by Champlain, is a tiny hamlet delicately nestled at the bottom of a small bay on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

Founded in the early 19th century by a Scotsman, Neil McLaren, the village holds a rich history. In 1893, McLaren’s son built the white wooden chapel, still standing near the rocks at the water’s edge. This chapel is arguably one of the most photographed buildings among our designated villages.

A small road descends from the top of the cliffs, allowing visitors to slowly discover the quaint hamlet, scattered houses blending with the landscape. One can walk along the rocks from the small dock to the chapel (which is private but accessible). A stream trickles down in a cascade, just before flowing into the river, which is already almost the sea, where wild geese come to forage in season.

The charm of Port-au-Persil lies in its intimacy, serenity, and peaceful soul, away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Please do not disturb; it is one of our landscape jewels. Take the time to observe the beauty of the river while comfortably seated on the newly renovated dock. It’s worth the detour!
